Unit price and order button:
two spots in the checkout path
Two details almost every shop has and many get wrong: the price per kilo or litre next to the price, and the label of the last button before the purchase.
What the EU requires
The unit price comes from the Price Indication Directive, the order button from the Consumer Rights Directive. Both sit at the offer, not in the terms.
| What | EU reference |
|---|---|
| Unit price Next to the selling price, the price per kilogram, litre, metre or square metre for goods offered by weight, volume, length or area. Not needed when it equals the selling price (for example exactly 1 kg). | Art. 3(1) Directive 98/6/EC |
| Order button “order with obligation to pay” The button that places the order, labelled legibly and only with these words or an unambiguous corresponding formulation. | Art. 8(2) Directive 2011/83/EU |
| Summary right before it Directly before the button, clearly and prominently: the main characteristics, the total price including delivery and, for subscriptions, duration and termination. | Art. 8(2) Directive 2011/83/EU |
Step by step
Shopify, unit price
In the product variant, fill in Unit price (total measurement and base measurement) where Shopify offers it for your country. The theme then shows it next to the price.
Shopify, order button
Online Store, Themes, in the menu of the live theme edit default theme content (or languages), search for the pay button text and set the wording in your shop language, in German “Zahlungspflichtig bestellen”.
WooCommerce, unit price
With Germanized or German Market, enter unit, product quantity and base quantity per product; the plugin shows the unit price.
WooCommerce, order button
Germanized and German Market set the label themselves. Without them, in the classic checkout: the woocommerce_order_button_text filter. In the block checkout the label sits in the “Place Order” block in the page editor.
Questions
Do I need a unit price for 500 g?
Yes, if the goods are offered by weight. It is only unnecessary when it equals the selling price.
Can the button say “Buy now”?
The directive asks for “order with obligation to pay” or an unambiguous corresponding formulation. Whether another wording is unambiguous enough is a legal question; with the directive's wording it does not arise.
What a scan shows
It opens real product pages and reports where the unit price is missing on goods sold by quantity. In the checkout it reads the order button label as far as it gets without buying. The withdrawal button belongs to the checkout path too.
As of 11 October 2026. We name the reference so you can read it yourself; this is not legal advice.
